Boots on the Ground ver. 2: AI-Driven Tools for Maximizing Soybean Yield and Profitability

A 3-year interdisciplinary and inter-university collaborative regional project, co-directed by Dr. Shawn Conley, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Dr. Paul Esker, Pennsylvania State University, with collaborators in OH, MI, IA, IN, IL, MO, and ND.

The proposed project aims to test and validate novel tools (Agroptimizer for profitable management, OCM, and satellite-assisted field scouting alerts) in farmer fields across the NC-US region.

The proposed project has four major components:

(1) Participating field identification. Agroptimizer recommended management practices will be tested against farmer practices in a minimum of five fields per state. The satellite-assisted field scouting alert system will also be tested in the same fields during the growing season.

(2) Field experiments and data collection. Each state collaborator will assist farmers in designing and executing the experiments and in-season field scouting using our satellite-assisted field scouting alert system and the Open Crop Manager. Agroptimizer recommended practices for maximum profit will be evaluated in strip trials with three replications.

(3) Data analysis. The data will be analyzed to meet the objective of this proposal. The effectiveness of Agroptimizer management systems in increasing profit will be assessed by comparing the respective yield and profit from farmers’ management in each field.

(4) Communication and dissemination of results. All results of the proposed project will be disseminated to producers and the public via peer-reviewed scientific and extension publications.
